The shallow depth of the harbor was a blessing, as most of the ships sunk during the attack were refloated, repaired and played valuable roles in the Pacific war. The irony of them being sitting ducks in the harbor is that as the Hawaiian islands are a group of volcanic peaks, if they had been anywhere but the harbor, they would have been sunk in deep water and irretrievably lost.
