Country music performer and actor Hoyt Axton portrayed the role of Wes McKinney, Maggie's ex-husband and Sam's father who was also a country music performer. The character of Wes appeared in two episodes during the seventh season: "Sam's Father" and "A Camping We Will Go". Hoyt Axton wrote the Three Dog Night hit "Joy To The World"; he also was the son of songwriter Mae Boren Axton who co-wrote Elvis' smash hit "Heartbreak Hotel.". Season 7 was in 1984, the same year Hoyt Axton starred as Randall Peltzer in Gremlins.
