Martin Campbell directed the James Bond thriller GoldenEye (1995) but turned down the chance to direct its immediate sequel, Il domani non muore mai (1997), in order to direct this film. Likewise, Sir Anthony Hopkins was considered for the role of the main villain in that film. Campbell eventually returned to the Bond franchise with Casino Royale (2006) while Hopkins appeared in another spy-themed franchise sequel: Mission: Impossible II (2000).
