Two years after the series was canceled, Alan Hale Jr. guest starred in Selvaggio west: The Night of the Sabatini Death (1969). After his character Ned Brown ably assisted the hero, James West asked Brown what his plans were now, and he replied, "I'm going to make a big dream come true. And do you know what my big dream is? I'm going to spend my vacation all alone... on a desert island." A few notes of the Gilligan's theme song are then played in an homage to the series. (Jim Backus also appeared in this episode, but disappointingly shared no scenes with Hale).
