Clint Eastwood and Al Pacino were both considered for lead roles but both didn't want to be away from America that long. Clint Eastwood wanted the role of the colonel as it would've only taken 2 weeks to film his scenes. Al Pacino didn't want to film in the jungle as he had previously got ill filming The Godfather Part II in the jungle.
