According to the 8th September 1978 edition 'The Advertiser', the location of Andamooka, South Australia was chosen by doing an aerial location scout of Central Australia in the northern part of South Australia and the western part of New South Wales. Producer Byron Kennedy said: "It was the most suitable town, with the right character for the needs of the film".
