Years after completion of the film, director Ridley Scott revealed that the mood of the film was meant to imitate as closely as possible the mood that painter Edward Hopper captured in his famous 1942 painting, "Nighthawks." Scott reported that he wanted the entire movie to feel as though it was filmed in the same world portrayed in "Nighthawks", saying "I was constantly waving a reproduction of this painting under the noses of the production team to illustrate the look and mood I was after."
