During the production of Niagara, which Fox began filming in late May of 1952, Marilyn received word from the studio that she was given the lead role of Lorelei Lee for the upcoming production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which was based on the 1949 musical comedy of the same name(the musical, which introduced theater audiences to Carol Channing, was in turn based on the 1925 comic novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes written by Anita Loos). Marilyn received the news of her being cast as Lorelei Lee on June 1, 1952, which was her 26th birthday that day.
