In late 1999, Universal decided to release a special unrated cut of "American Pie", alongside the original theatrical version, on video and DVD. After an NC-17 workprint of the film had leaked online several months before its official release, Universal knew that fans wanted to see those racy outtakes and had them reinserted for home video. But, there are still some parts from the NC-17 version that are missing from home video.
