May was the first main character to defeat another main character's rival when she defeated Dawn's rival, Zoey, in the Wallace Cup during the Diamond & Pearl series. This was a feat that Ash himself didn't accomplish until the Best Wishes series when he defeated Cilan's rival, Burgundy and Iris's rival, Georgia, during the Club Battle Tournament. Similarly, Trip is the first of Ash's rivals to lose a battle against one of Ash's friends, losing to Cilan during the same Club Battle Tournament.
