In the show's version of American history, Matthew Santos (Jimmy Smits) is identified as the first Hispanic president, even though the actor who plays President Bartlet, Martin Sheen, is half Hispanic (his father was an immigrant from Cuba of Spanish extraction). The West Wing writers never indicated that Bartlet shared any of Sheen's Hispanic ancestry.
