There are some symmetries between the stories. In the first story the main character refuses to play with another man's cards, and in the last one another character explains how this would be impossible. The same twist where a person apparently dead manages to surprise the purported "killer" also happens twice (once in "Near Algodones" and once in "All Gold Canyon"). In two different stories, a younger man attempts to rob a much older man, with disastrous consequences. The first and last stories both feature singing protagonists, albeit on opposite sides of the law, and these protagonists are last seen making an ascending journey (Buster Scruggs' spirit flies up to heaven, the bounty hunters go up the hotel staircase with their prize).
