The fictional ghost town in the film is based on the city of Pripyat, Ukraine, which houses the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. On April 26, 1986, the plant exploded in an accident, releasing century-lasting nuclear radiation among the city of Chernobyl and its closest neighbor Pripyat. Though a handful of families still live in Chernobyl, Pripyat is left totally abandoned since 1986.
