When Ripley is trying to establish radio contact with Earth, she says, "This is the Nostromo out of the Solomons." The fictional area of space she's referring to could be a reference to the real-life Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, which are far from civilization. The Nostromo is far away from Earth civilization in this film.
