In this film, Bane is created through the use of a "super soldier serum". While various super-soldiers (both heroes and villains) have been used in American comic books since the 1940s, the phrase "super soldier serum" is typically associated with the origin of Captain America/Steve Rogers in a 1941 story. Rogers was depicted as a frail young man whose body and mind were enhanced to the peak of human perfection through use of an experimental serum.
