James Gray said the scheme Paul and Johnny hatch to steal a computer and sell it is based on an incident from his own childhood when he and a friend tried to steal blueprints from Star Trek (1979) on display at a Bloomingdale's, and were caught and detained by store security. Gray's father got him out of it, but he never saw his friend again, whom he says died in a drug deal around 1986.
