In this film, V'Ger is actually NASA's Voyager VI that got sucked into a black hole and ended up on the other side of the galaxy and was trying to get home to its creator. In Star Trek: Voyager (1995), the ship and crew are swept to the other side of the galaxy by an entity known as The Caretaker and, throughout the run of the series, are trying to get home.
