In an interview with "The Sunday Times", Tony Scott revealed that he offered the role of Creasy to Russell Crowe, who turned it down. Scott said: "I called [Crowe] while he was on the set of Master & Commander - Sfida ai confini del mare (2003) and I said, 'So, "Man on Fire"?' He said, 'Listen, pal, have you seen "Proof of Life" (Rapimento e riscatto (2000)]?' I said, "Yes". He said, 'I've been there--done that.'"
