Walt Disney was the unwitting impetus behind the film getting started. MGM chief Louis B. Mayer was determined to come up with something that would equal the success of Disney's runaway smash Biancaneve e i sette nani (1937), which had become the most successful film of all time in a matter of months. Walt originally wanted to make "The Wizard Of Oz" after "Snow White," but MGM owned the rights to the book. Disney would later go on to make the semi-sequel Nel fantastico mondo di Oz (1985), the somewhat farcical I Muppet e il mago di Oz (2005) and Il grande e potente Oz (2013). Fact check: Disney did not produce the animated sequel Ritorno a Oz (1972), Filmation did. ABC Television which is a subsidiary of Disney produced the 2005 made-for-TV feature film I Muppet e il mago di Oz (2005) starring Ashanti. Disney did produce the 2013 live-action prequel to The Wizard of Oz Il grande e potente Oz (2013) starring James Franco and Mila Kunis.
