At least some of the Roman cavalry in the opening battle were real soldiers: this movie employed twenty members of the British Army's King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. King's Troop's horse-drawn ceremonial guns sometimes have to travel at high speed despite each weighing over a tonne and having no brakes, so the soldiers are required to be very skilled horse-riders.
