In a deleted scene, local fishermen tell Rachel some details of Samara's backstory. They tell her that Samara is Richard and Anna's biological child, and that a doctor from overseas helped them get pregnant. It is assumed that they made deals with demonic forces as the fishermen tell Rachel that Richard and Anna often "messed with nature" before they finally gave birth to Samara, which would have served as an explanation for her supernatural abilities. As The Ring Two (2005) explained that Samara was adopted by the Morgans due to difficulties conceiving a child, and her biological mother Evelyn claims that Samara's father was an oceanic deity, this deleted scene can either be taken as non-canon, or this new backstory is a retcon.
