In the 2015 National Geographic Il relitto del Titanic (2015) it has been newly theorized that due to the size of the debris field, it would have been impossible for the ship to sink the way it's portrayed in the movie. The stern would have had to have been still connected as Titanic went under and not separated until much closer to the bottom impact. The stern would have corkscrewed immediately after detaching, as evidenced by the large scraping of the sea bottom near the final resting place of the stern.
