Originally scheduled to be released on Valentine's Day weekend in the February "dump month". Universal didn't really think anything would become of "American Pie". But, in the film's first test screening, the results were through the roof. It scored in the 90th percentile. This caused Universal to re-assess the film and release it in the July "summer blockbuster" slot.
