On October 12, 1985, the show's original announcer Johnny Olson passed away due to a cerebral hemorrhage, a complication from a stroke he had suffered several days earlier. It was a great loss to the show both professionally and personally, he had done the show for thirteen years, and his face and voice were as much a part of the Price landscape as the big wheel and Barker's Beauties. The producers started an immediate search for a new announcer, someone with the kind of personality that would be unique to the show and fit in with the festive and intense atmosphere for which Price was known. It was also important for the new announcer to have "listenability," this is a voice that would not grate on you for an hour, because the announcer has to talk constantly for the entire show. Gene Wood, Rod Roddy, Rich Jeffries, and Bob Hilton all tried out for the announcing position, but the best fit was obvious to the producers. 48 year old Rod Roddy was selected for the gig as the show's second full-time announcer. He not only had a lot of experience, but he also had a bit of Johnny's tone in his voice, although he was by no means an imitation. Roddy was best known to audiences as the off-screen announcer on the ABC sitcom Bolle di sapone (1977), who at the time was also announcing Press Your Luck (1983), also taped at CBS Television City, at Studio 41.
