The show would not have gotten made if it wasn't for the first Batman movie, however, Bruce Timm made it clear to Jean MacCurdy that he did not want to make the show as a spin-off of the Tim Burton movies and wanted it to be unique; he had his own ideas of what Batman was; sometimes those ideas coincided with the movie, some times they didn't.
