The oil rig's name was Gaviota, but Isabel Coixet changed it into Genefke, for the founder of IRCT (played by Julie Christie), to whom the movie is dedicated. IRCT is an organization that promotes and supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and works for the prevention of torture worldwide. Takes of the oil rig were shot in Belfast and Bilbao. Interior scenes were filmed in Navalcarnero (Madrid, Spain).
