Before auditioning for the role of Amos Brearly, actor Ronald Magill had grown a pair of 'mutton-chop' sideburns for a stage role. He planned to shave them off once the play had ended before beginning filming, but the producers thought the look suited the character of Amos and asked him to keep them. Magill remained in the show, and had to keep the sideburns, for 19 years. After retiring from the role, he shaved them off live on air whilst appearing on the chat show Wogan (1985).
