Kano, who is Australian in most games, is played by Australian actor Josh Lawson, after his two predecessors (Trevor Goddard in Mortal Kombat (1995), Darren Shahlavi in Mortal Kombat (2011)) had both been British. Interestingly, in the original Mortal Kombat (1992) game, Kano was Japanese-American; in the 1995 movie adaptation, Goddard played him with a Cockney accent, which many (including the game's creators Ed Boon and John Tobias) mistook for Australian. Boon and Tobias were so impressed by Goddard's interpretation of the character that they retconned Kano's history to Australian in future games; Goddard never corrected them, and, in fact, maintained that he was Australian until his death in 2003.
