The castle used as the MacLeod clan's home is Eilean Donan Castle belonging clan Mackenzie, on the west coast of Scotland. It was largely rebuilt in the twentieth century and many parts of it including the bridge were only added in the 1920s. Ironically it was notorious for having the severed heads of defeated enemies displayed on its' battlements and is still said to be haunted by the decapitated ghost of a Spanish soldier. The appearance of the castle in the movie turned it popular, being seen again in the later movies Loch Ness (1996), Entrapment (1999) and Il mondo non basta (1999). Ironically, the last two movies are related to Sean Connery (Ramirez in the movie): he starred Entrapment (1999) with Catherine Zeta-Jones, and in Il mondo non basta (1999) Pierce Brosnan played James Bond, the iconic character that Connery made popular to be the first to play him in Agente 007 - Licenza di uccidere (1962).
