In 1988, it was proposed that the series be rebooted as "Smurfs in Space". The concept for this would have had Gargamel blasting the entire Smurf Village into the cosmos; the day is saved when Papa Smurf and Handy redesign the Village as a fully-enclosed, self-sufficient starship...which they christen the *Smurf-Trek*. As with Moon-city Alpha in "Space: 1999", the little blue folks would proceed to drift across the so-called Final Frontier, "...To smurf out new life and civilizations, and to smurfily smurf where no Smurf has smurfed before." They would also carry pseudo-futuristic weaponry that, while non-lethal, would render hostiles *SUBAR* (That is, Smurfed Up Beyond All Recognition).Predictably, this concept was very soon dismissed as way too similar to "Star Trek". It didn't help that Handy's new assistant, Technobabble Smurf, spoke with a Scottish accent: "She cannot smurf much more of this! She's smurfing apart at the smurfs!"
