Initially there was no musical score written whatsoever. When Kevin Stitt originally showed Matt Reeves the finished version of the film, he had included the theme song from Godzilla over the end credits. Reeves liked this so much that he had Michael Giacchino, a fellow lover of monster movies, write basically what is the movies theme that would have been used in a huge budget version of this same story.
