The scene where Dirk fights off Eva's attackers on the beach is much different from the book. In the book Eva is on the beach to sunbathe when she is attacked by General Kazim's assassins. Instead of receiving a blow to the head and becoming unconscious, as in the film, she is nearly choked to death before Pitt intervenes by shooting a fishing spear through the head of one of the assassins and twisting the head of the other around twice with his bare hands. Pitt helps Eva escape the beach after her rental car is set ablaze by a third accomplice, who Pitt subdues in an equally ridiculous manner and starts to question before the man swallows a cyanide pill concealed in a fake tooth. Pitt disposes of their bodies in the ocean and Kazim is left to guess whatever became of them. After this close encounter, Eva has dinner with Dirk, where they each discuss their business in Africa.
