Ivar's story-line in the show bears more similarities with the later Norwegian king, Eirik "Bloodaxe" Haraldsson, than with Ivar the Boneless of history and sagas. Like Ivar in the show, Eirik was the favorite son of a king, murdered his brother(s), briefly ruled York, had a manipulative wife and established a tyrannical rule in Norway before being driven into exile by a brother returning from England with an army, as his followers turned on him. The events played out in the same order, with the exception of the kingship of York: Eirik ruled York in his exile.
