David Cronenberg and David Lynch have both voiced their disappointment with the film, finding it derivative of their own work without the same thematic depth. Cronenberg noted that the life cycle of the alien mirrors that of the virus in Il demone sotto la pelle (1975): in through the mouth, develops in the stomach from which it emerges, complete with corrosive enzyme. Lynch thought the chest-burster resembled the infant in Eraserhead - La mente che cancella (1977). Although the two directors disliked the film, it didn't stop either of them from working with the cast of this film in their own subsequent projects. Cronenberg cast Tom Skerritt in La zona morta (1983) and Ian Holm in Il pasto nudo (1991) and eXistenZ (1999). Lynch cast John Hurt in The Elephant Man (1980) and Harry Dean Stanton in Cuore selvaggio (1990), Una storia vera (1999), Inland Empire - L'impero della mente (2006), and Twin Peaks: il ritorno (2017). Lynch, Stanton, and Skerritt also appeared together in Lucky (2017).
