The waters of the passages between the nine circles of hell represent hell's rivers ferried through by Dante and Virgil by Charon. La Taupe playing the role of Charon, Scarlett the role of Virgil and George Dante. La Taupe with deception and confused reluctance passing the others through the rivers, Scarlett guiding the others by narrative through hell and George having broken a promise to a loved one resulting in their death and his broken love bond with Scarlett.
