Shelley Duvall has said that the incredible stress of filming under the direction of perfectionist Stanley Kubrick caused her to grow physically ill. Jack Nicholson even once said that she showed him clumps of her hair that had fallen out. Duvall said working under Kubrick was so brutal that she also once told movie critic Roger Ebert that the experience was "almost unbearable." She's quoted in the book "The Complete Kubrick" saying: "From May until October I was really in and out of ill health because the stress of the role was so great. Stanley pushed me and prodded me further than I've ever been pushed before. It's the most difficult role I've ever had to play."
