Because of censorship rules at the time, in Alfred Hitchcock's version, Maxim couldn't be made guilty of his wife's murder without being punished for it, so the narrative was changed to him accidentally killing her. This infuriated novelist Daphne Du Maurier. In this version, the story can be, and is, told as she wrote it.
