When posing as a city engineer, Simon Gruber (Jeremy Irons) uses a heavy American accent to fool his adversaries. The same trick was used by his brother Hans (Alan Rickman) in Trappola di cristallo (1988). Like his brother, Simon also uses a hostage situation as a front for a big heist, and despite extensive communication between him and McClane, they do not meet in person until the end.
