Writers, showrunners, and crew, believing until the very last scene of the last episode was being written that the fifth season would be the last, filled the series wall to wall with meta jokes, references and callbacks to past episodes, shoutouts to cast, crew and family, subtle, overt, and openly cheesy and/or deep symbolism and nerdiness, and anything else they could get in from their - and fans' - bucket lists. Including sneaking in references to the season and episode numbers in each relevant episode. The number 5 comes up at least once per episode in 5a.
