As a tie-in, the "Derrick Storm" and "Nikki Heat" books Castle writes are published in real life. The novels are written as stand-alone stories that don't require watching the TV series, but also contain in-jokes and references to events on the show. While the books are credited to Richard Castle, the ghost-writer's identity was preserved for the series to give more authenticity, leaving only one clue that it could be found in the author's bio in the form of an eponymous award that Castle has won: "Tom Straw Award for Mystery Literature". Tom Straw is a TV producer and screenwriter who published a total of 16 books in 11 years, 6 of Storm and 10 of Heat, written alternatively. About Storm he wrote: "A Brewing Storm" (2012), "A Raging Storm" (2012), "A Bloody Storm" (2012), "Storm Front (2013)", "Wild Storm" (2014) and "Heat Storm" (2017); and about Heat he wrote: "Heat Wave" (2008), "Naked Heat" (2010), "Heat Rises" (2011), "Frozen Heat" (2012), "Deadly Heat" (2013), "Raging Heat" (2014), "Driving Heat" (2015), "High Heat" (2016), "Heat Storm" (2017) and "Crashing Heat" (2019).
