The opening FBI training scene with Clarice running through the woods can be seen as a call-back to her traumatic childhood experience of running away from the farm. In essence she is still 'lost in the woods' as an adult, having become an FBI agent to save lives in order to banish the trauma of failing to save the slaughtered lambs when she was a child.
