Unusually for big-budget features at the time, its special effects shots were shot by ILM on standard 4-perf 35mm film in anamorphic - the same format as the rest of the movie - instead of on 8-perf VistaVision 35mm, which ILM usually shot on, or on 65mm. This was because so many of the shots were slow-motion and filmed up to 360 frames per second, and the Wilcam VistaVision cameras normally used by ILM would have jammed or torn up the film at high speeds.
