All three Cars films to date had been released the same year as a film in Universal Pictures' Fast & Furious film franchise, of which Cars - Motori ruggenti (2006) was released the same year as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Cars 2 (2011) released the same year as Fast & Furious 5 (2011), and this film came out the same year as Fast & Furious 8 (2017).
