When Spock was repairing the console in Engineering, he had to remove the large cover. The interior of that console emitted several intensely bright lights (and perhaps harmful radiation since Scotty shouted not to take off the cover). Presumably, engineering technicians would have used eye protection to work inside, but Spock didn't. This is perhaps a nod to the television episode which revealed the Vulcan inner eyelid that protects against the bright light on Vulcan.
