Jon Finch was originally cast as Kane, and came down with illness during the first day of filming. He was taken to the hospital where he learned he had diabetes. Scott had to decide who to recast over lunch that day and landed on John Hurt, who was performing a play in the area. Hurt was the original consideration for Kane, but couldn't do the film at first because of a schedule conflict that ended up not happening.
