The show's creators, Richard Levinson and William Link, sometimes used the yellow pages to find a profession for the killer in their next episode. The episode Colombo: L'illusionista (1976), starring Jack Cassidy, was created when they came across "Magicians" in the directory. It is also, incidentally, one of Peter Falk's favorite top four episodes of the original series.
