Alison Brie said in interviews that she fought for this role to break her out of being typecast as "prissy, buttoned-up, type A women." That's why she had no problem with getting naked in several episodes. She said the part of Ruth not only broke her out of that box, it was "an actor's dream in terms of flexing every muscle."
