The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) initially gave this movie an NC-17 rating. The NC-17 was established in 1990 to replace the X rating, due to the latter rating's association with pornography. According to Paul Verhoeven, the MPAA tried to encourage TriStar Pictures to not make edits for an R-rating, as they wanted a major film to prove to the American public that the NC-17 rating did not signify pornography. However, TriStar's contract with Verhoeven stipulated an R-rated film; thus forty-five seconds were removed to fulfill these obligations. The NC-17 version was released theatrically overseas, and is available on video in America.
