Rip Torn was offered the role of Artie because the producers loved his work in the Albert Brooks film Defending Your Life (1991). He would not agree to the role unless he felt he had a rapport with series lead star Garry Shandling. The two met and Torn felt he had good chemistry with Shandling and accepted the role.
