Knuckles' backstory gives us an insight into the Echidna Tribe, best explored in the Sonic the Comic series. We first saw the Tribe in the original movie with its leader, Pachacamac, now confirmed as Knuckles' father. The war between Longclaw's Owl Tribe and the Echidna Tribe may be a translation of a deep-cut storyline in the comic series of the war between the Echidnas and the Drakons. In the comics, the Echidnas are duty-bound to protecting the emeralds from the Drakons, the original creators of the emeralds who sought to use them to conquer the galaxy.
